I won Literary Death Match with my Christmas story A Marvellous Party (99p at Amazon & Shortfire Press) and am now writing a novel. This is taking rather longer than I’d hoped, as a couple of months ago I realised the one I was working on was dead in the water, and started on another. Also, when you’ve spent eight years plus writing 500 words, 2000 for special occasions, 70,000 takes a bit of getting used to.
Here’s a piece I wrote for the Arvon Foundation about one of the excellent writing courses I went on in June.
And here’s a story for you, written quickly.
I’ve been blogging since 2000, when I made terrible websites out of Dreamweaver. I’ve written for the design and lifestyle blog Domestic Sluttery for nearly three years, including as the tall fashion columnist and book reviewer.
Before I really knew what blogging was, or how to do it well, I wrote a blog called The Lithium Teapot, and when I unsuccessfully tried to give up smoking in 2007 (finally managed it in Christmas 2011 – hurrah!) I wrote a blog called – obviously - Nobody Likes A Quitter.
I am Commercial Projects Editor at The Times, where I have worked in various roles since 2010. I have eight years’ experience in digital, arts and lifestyle journalism, and am a member of Mind charity’s media advisory board. I write almost entirely flippant film reviews for The Lady.
I won scholarships to train at the BBC and Empire magazine, and have written for The Guardian, The Times, The Spectator, The Sunday Times, The Arts Desk, Q, Kerrang!, Heat, Kruger, Gigwise and Sky.
I am a regular guest on BBC radio, and have also appeared on BBC One. Panel work includes PR Week’s PR and the Media, The Low-Cost Digital Conference, Empire’s Big Screen, Pen and Penmanship with Domestic Sluttery and reading from my cringeworthy diaries at Ultraculture’s Teenage Wasteland.
